Editor,
A few bad apples here, a few bad apples there -- even among highly specialized Military Intelligence units in the most well-trained, disciplined, professional military in history -- and before you know it you've got a harvest of bad apples. One has to wonder why so many American jailers and interrogators in such far-flung places displayed such brutal initiative unless Donald Rumsfeld inspired them with directions as to the necessity, for the good of America, to chain people to the ceiling and the floor and beat information that is vital to us out of them. Why else would Roberto Gonzales and others have studied torture so carefully for George Bush and approved as not-torture "techniques" that are torture? Ah, those Arabs. "They only respect strength," eh?
