Editor,
Americans use too much petroleum, almost all of which is burned to power motor vehicles. Highways and city streets are choked with motor vehicles. Sprawling roads and parking lots bury the habitats of living things under pavement.
Negotiating with the Saudis to produce more oil and drilling domestically to find more oil are a foolish and short-sighted "solution" to this problem. The oil and motor vehicle industries make enormous amounts of money as long as Americans continue to commute using the products these businesses provide. Everybody else loses.
