Editor,
None of the reasons being guessed are big enough for the WHIG to have lied so aggressively.
But if you look at (a) the Bush cabal's secretive, dishonest, autocratic method of governance, (b) their stated neocon aims to dominate the globe militarily, and (c) their cronyism, corporatism, and concerted attacks on the American social fabric, what you see is ideology driving them blindly -- madness, in other words.
Ideology is powerful psychological juice -- as powerful as sexual infatuation. It has an answer for every question, selects the evidence that fits, rejects the evidence that doesn't. It locks dissenters out of the conversation. It exists in an "echo chamber." This is why no one can figure out "the reason" they went to war.
BushCo are a proto-fascist circle of ideologues. They are probably more driven by their inner ideological demon than by their desire to control the world's oil or for infinite wealth and power. There is a sense, probably, in which even they don't know why they invaded Iraq. It made sense to them at the time, fit somehow with their "war on terror." But it blew up in their faces, as has their extreme, unmitigated consumption with unregulated capitalism, no government, and "free markets."
Ideologues do not converse. They dictate, and they storm out of the room when you disagree with them.
