It seems that you believe the United States is in the business of promoting democracy. But the most superficial survey of American history since WWII provides a stunning and seemingly endless list of popular democracies that the United States has destabilized, toppled, and replaced with military dictators eager to torture and kill to promote the anti-democratic interests of multinational corporations. I don't understand how a newspaper of your stature and experience can manage to sustain such blindness and ignorance vis a vis one of the most rapacious tyrannies in the history of the human race.
