Israel. Water.

Editor,

Israel has wanted its northern border to be the Litani River since 1947 -- to have access to that water. Israel's cleansing of southern Lebanon now is to achieve that aim. Gaza has no water, so Israel left, although they do continue to go in there to kill Palestinians and tear up their infrastructure. Israel's wall is routed so as to confiscate West Bank water, because Israel is having problems with drought and its population's water usage exceeds supply in the best of times. The current military-political crisis story floats on a water resource subtext, along with Israel's expansionism, manifest destiny, and all that.
