Editor,
Hailing Milton Friedman as the champion of so-called "free" markets and "greater reliance on individual responsibility" is code, first, for granting monopoly capitalists license to crush or absorb "competitors" and, second, leaving "promotion of the general welfare" to disempowered, isolated consumers.
The authoritarianism necessary to enforce this economic order is most visible in the disappearing, torturing dictatorships "free-market capitalists" inflicted on postwar Latin America and recent legislation passed by the U.S. Congress annulling habeas corpus and legitimizing, if not torture, torment of individuals our "president" disappears.
