Editor,
Repeating again and again that the "surge" is "working" does not make it so, and basing policy on the transparency of the "fact" that it is is completely wrong-headed.
Civil society in Iraq has been devastated as a result of the American invasion. The civilian death toll is enormous, and it is continuing to grow -- slower possibly than before as ethic groups have segregated themselves from one another to survive -- so what do smaller numbers mean?
Politically Iraq is a violent shambles, which the American military, by providing arms to militias representing every side, has made even more unstable. Millions of people have been displaced. Billions of American taxpayers' dollars pour every week into the hands of war profiteers. The American military should remain engaged in Iraq? There is no sense in it.
