Editor,
Commuters beg for mass transit alternatives that do not exist, so reducing gasoline usage will require more creativity than the average person has. But electricity is squandered flagrantly, and coal fired electricity plants are hell on the environment, both because mountain top blasting is the definition of a sin and because coal fired electricity generation in the U.S. emits more CO2 than all of our cars combined. So an electricity tax will dim the lights, stop the escalators, make doors open manually again, and in general reduce electricity usage practically and in simple ways. The revenue collected would be invested in weatherizing older buildings and developing green technology.
