Editor,
Blowing up civilians in unwarranted air raids, shooting up civilian neighborhoods in a panic, and torturing innocent victims of unwarranted home invasions, whether in Afghanistan or Iraq, diminishes the security of Americans and American interests at home and abroad far more than any rag-tag assortment of would-be terrorists holed up in the Pashtun mountains could ever hope to.
Nine-eleven was entirely preventable if George Bush & Co. had any interest in the U.S.A. beyond looting our Treasury and cashing out our economy.
Barack Obama's continuation of either of George Bush's military adventures amounts to a futile and counterproductive goose chase after a chimera that either does not exist at all or could be handled quietly with competent police work and politically credible relations with leaders representative of actual popular sentiment throughout the Muslim world.
