Editor,
Bill Clinton (R) brilliantly ended "welfare as we know it," substituting cleverly-named "workfare" for long-term eligibility for cash payments to people with no job skills. The premise was: if you don't work, you don't eat -- the sort of "Christian" values Republicans, in their all-consuming selfish pursuit of the all-mighty dollar, espouse.
So the roles declined, the funding went into the pockets of the richest 1% of Americans (where all of our money belongs, stupid), and now there is no work.
USA! USA! Vote Republican, boys and girls. They will see to it that "you," not some lazy welfare bum, get to spend "your" money.
