Editor,
Higher education in the U.S.A. went the same way as health care during the Reagan "revolution" -- just another business. Now we see just how difficult it is to repair a truly marvelous institution once it has been sacked by a hoard of savages.
I went to graduate school on a U.S. Public Health Services fellowship in the 1960's, unheard of these days. Now you do it on student loans to let the small-time sharpies have you in their pocket for a few hundred thousand dollars, including interest, for doing nothing.
