Editor,
I understand the drift of this article -- the horror experienced by certain well-heeled whites at the growing number of people of color breathing the same air as them at the country club. So maybe the conversation that no one wants to have is the one about class in America.
As polite society works on polite ways to sweep race under the carpet, not so well-heeled people of every color are being ground into the dirt by a society that allows a few people in this country to be polite and the rest to struggle to stay afloat.
It seems to me that poor people of color bear a disproportionate share of the cruelty that powers America, but maybe that is just the racial profiler in me. After all, more people are being tossed out of the lifeboat into the impolite waters of insolvency every day, and who knows but maybe the races will all suffer equally.
I do not believe this was Dr. King's dream.
