Nuclear-weapons-free Middle East.

Editor,

Iran is struggling to develop a defensive nuclear capability to deter attack by either or both of two intransigent adversaries: Israel and the United States.

Iran has asked repeatedly and been repeatedly snubbed by the U.S. for a security guarantee: that the U.S. will not attack. (Remember the neocons: The road to Iran runs through Baghdad?)

Israel is known to have hundreds of nuclear warheads which it refuses to admit to owning. Declare the Middle East a nuclear-free zone, dismantle Israel's nuclear weapons, and thus remove the incentive for a nuclear arms race in the Middle East.
