Police.

Editor,

The NYT coverage of the G-20 summit is making my blood boil. It’s all about police patrols, police boats, police helicopters, police armored vehicles, riot police, police, police, police.

In case no one has noticed, the G-20 meeting is taking place in the United States of America, where citizens are endowed with the inalienable freedoms of assembly and speech.

Protecting plundering, pillaging, polluting corporations and their lackeys from the speech of people who reject the authority of corporations to rule the world is not the function of the police.

The function of the police is to protect the safety and the rights of citizens who have come to Pittsburgh to voice opposition to the antidemocratic rule of the corporate oligarchy.
