Editor,
That was the worst, most confused speech that Mr. Obama has ever made.
Crazed jihadis using despicable methods -- despicable methods -- are motivated by the presence of the imperial U.S.A. in the Muslim lands to drive it and its proxies out. The hegemony of the empire, the interests of its giant corporations, is non-negotiable; the empire owns this world, so the empire stays.
And Mr. Obama thinks this war is just.
Suppose that the global economy, which employs billions to concentrate the wealth of the planet in the hands of a few, did not infiltrate the Muslim lands seeking oil, propping up dictators in that pursuit, unconditionally supporting Israeli ethnic cleansing of Palestine. There would be no crazed jihadis trying, with despicable methods, to drive the empire out.
What is "just" about this equation? Why does the say of the corporate empire trump the say of every other society on this planet?
