What are we defending?

Your editorial didn't mention $738 billion of "defense" spending. Why so much? It's more than all the rest of the countries on the planet combined spend on "defense."

What are we defending? Functionally illiterate high school graduates? Uninsured, unemployed, homeless, hopeless people kicked out of the corporate lifeboat? Is this the "democracy" the United States is spreading across the globe with its guns? And from whom are we defending it?
