Debt.

Editor,

Students of neoliberal plunder of developing economies have known all about debt for decades as an instrument first of enslavement, then of destruction, as we watched the IMF and the World Bank implement the Washington Consensus, saddling whole populations with crushing debt so that giant loans went straight into the accounts of multinational corporations.

Debt from the capitalist perspective is the gift that keeps on giving: money for nothing, the perfect way to get paid for not doing or producing anything. It was only a matter of time before debt ran amuck within the borders of "the homeland" and destroyed this economy as it has every other where it has been employed ruthlessly to plunder, as opposed to investing for the good of all.
