"[W]hat it will take to get politicians caring again about America’s forgotten millions:" Millions demonstrating in the streets.
Capitalists hate instability. If more Americans take to the streets than the ruling elite can gun down or disappear into gulags, they will have to throw the masses a bone.
If the bone is taxing multimillionaires instead of borrowing from them, and spending the money raised on infrastructure repair, this economy might lurch temporarily in the right direction.
Temporarily because the political economy of the United States is based on such drivel that this country will never be anything more than a banana republic dressed up in suit and tails.
