It's about oil.

The west is letting Libyan rebels be defeated to discourage Saudi Arabian dissidents from taking up arms when they are mowed down if they protest against the ruling family. The message to protesters in the oil lands is: no one is going to help you; keeping the oil flowing matters more.

The Saudis probably told the US and NATO to back off in Libya to prevent their Shias from becoming emboldened. Whatever the scenario, it is about oil, not human rights. You can bet your behind on that.
