Editor,
Would someone please knock some sense into the Republicans heads?
Monetary policy, while important to ensure that an adequate supply of money is available, is no substitute for fiscal stimulation, and the Republicans are so ideologically backward in this regard that every policy they suggest puts more people out of work, impoverishes more of the vulnerable people in our society, and hammers another nail into the coffin of our rapidly expiring recovery.
There is so much constructive spending the federal government could do to put people to work, put money into circulation, and boot-strap industries of the future -- not to mention funding education, health care, and innumerable social services -- it is hard to know where to begin to list it all. And of course the trillions wasted on standing up dead banks and fighting pointless wars could end tomorrow if this country had anything resembling real leadership in Washington.
But all the Republicans know how to do is rip money from the hands of the weak and give it to the most rapacious elements among the rich. Living with this political philosophy running rampant -- and everyone else falling over themselves to be "polite" to their purveyors -- is like living in a horrible nightmare from which there is no waking up.
