Republicans.

Editor,

The key word for me when it comes to Republican ideology is delusional, particularly with respect to Republicans' cockamamie economic theory, which at this very moment is hollowing out everything that was ever good about the USA.

The Republican cognitive process convinces itself of something -- global warming is a hoax, tax cuts for the rich stimulate the economy, embryos are people, unions are evil, regulating industry equals central planning, taxing capital gains as ordinary income is Stalinism -- repeat these "truths" to one another interminably, shout down any opposing view, dismiss all contrary empirical evidence as communist-inspired disinformation, build themselves an impervious alternate reality, and defend it angrily.

Which is fine. Crazy people are people, too. But they dominate the House of Representatives, are stymieing the Senate with interminable filibusters, and are thus creating real misery in millions of peoples' lives and doing serious harm to the the United States of America.

Another couple of elections, and perhaps the Republicans will be reduced to a few small but passionately paranoid cells grousing in dingy cafes about the demise of free market capitalism and people of color who want "stuff" (per Bill O'Reilly's brilliantly racist pronouncement after last week's election).
