Editor,
I am tired of hearing that what is at stake in these spy programs is Americans' "privacy rights." What is at issue here is freedom of speech, freedom of assembly, and, ultimately, criminalization of speech and assembly.
Does anyone remember Joseph McCarthy?
Well today you're looking at Joseph McCarthy enabled with Predator drones armed with Hellfire missiles.
Anyone who organizes or participates in a demonstration against -- oh, I don't know -- spying on Americans en masse can be labelled a "terrorist."
Expressions like "terrorist" and "worst of the worst" are easy to throw around if you are a government intent on shutting people up or, worse, covering up the stupid mistakes you've made that have resulted in the torture and/or murder of thousands of innocent people.
"Privacy rights" sound so academic.
American democracy and American citizens' lives are at stake in this.
Wake up, America!
