Editor,
Affordable housing is becoming scarce in every city I or any of my friends have ever lived in. Even here in Victoria, BC, the highest end luxury apartments are being built instead of affordable apartments. In San Francisco, where I lived before moving here -- and probably in other cities, too -- long-time residents are being evicted so their apartments can be converted to upscale condos.
Housing is just one more area where big money is calling the shots and working class people, although by definition they far outnumber the very rich, do not possess the political voice that only a lot of money can buy.
Cities everywhere do not have anywhere near enough money to subsidize construction of affordable housing because corporations and individuals with enormous hoards of cash have figured out how to prevent their hoards from being taxed.
It's the new world order: a return to the old world order.
The economics of affordable housing cannot be worked out because the politics of taxation have been lost.
