Editor,
The more I think about Iran developing nuclear electricity, the more I think this is a bad idea.
In principle I think Iran has a right under the NNPT to do so, and from a political perspective I think that the U.S. gins up phony threats emanating from Iran as just one more variation on the theme that the USA has to dominate the world militarily because scary enemies threaten the benevolent American dictatorship of rapacious corporations, larcenous banks, and murderous cops, etc.
But every now and then you read about a 7.9 magnitude earthquake in Iran; and there is no known way to dispose of nuclear waste. After Fukushima one has to ask why anyone thinking rationally would bring more nuclear power plants into existence on this planet.
Alternative sources of energy do exist, and in Germany in particular these sources are being brought online on a significant commercial scale. There is also the question of the value added that developing alternative energy technologies contributes to an economy by comparison with extracting oil.
Iran should think about this, too.
