Editor,
The Republican Party is a subversive cadre. It uses the electoral process to infiltrate government with extremist operatives whose job it is to thwart the will of the vast majority of the American public (as evidenced by the results of the 2012 national election) to rein in big corporations, out-of-control banks, violent police, and other organized elements in American society bent on suppression, oppression, and robbery of the American people.
I know it is taboo to compare the Republican Party to Italian Fascists in the 1920's and the National Socialists in the 1930's -- because the scale of their crimes (with the exception of Iraq -- and the whole gamut of American imperial military adventures now that I think of it) -- does not rise to those of the most murderous right-wing actors in history.
But the level of their criminality does, as does the level of their cynicism, dishonesty, and nihilism.
It is hard to reconcile 3 million Vietnamese killed by the USA with 27 million Russians killed by Germany in WWII, but how wars are fought has changed since 1945.
Asymmetry pits huge, technologically sophisticated militaries against popular uprisings that possess no artillery, no warships, no tanks, no air force, no satellites. Germany against the partisans during the Spanish Civil War might be a closer match to American aggression since WWII, and the numbers there might jibe a little better with the number of civilians murdered and guerrillas killed in Guatemala, Chile, El Salvador, Nicaragua, etc.
