Editor,
Anthropogenic climate change threatens Republicans' Bible story.
Exactly opposite to the belief of the indigenous Americans that European Bible thumpers wiped out -- that humanity is of the Earth and responsible for taking care of it -- American Christians believe passionately that the Earth and everything on and in it exist to "serve" Man.
So of course they have to deny climate change, and of course they have to oppose any limitations on their presumed "dominion" over everyone and everything.
To accept that they have been abysmal stewards of the planet and horrible citizens of the human community would necessitate acknowledging that their Bible story and the license their Bible story grants them are nonsense.
Like Galileo having to shut his mouth because the Earth revolving around the sun knocked the foundation out from under the absurd dictum of the Church that the Universe revolves around Man, warnings of global warming by scientists threaten the simple-minded religious justification for everything that is wrong with American culture and Americans' behavior in the world.
