Ideology.

Editor,
Right wing ideologues' most recent cooptation is of the word "ideology", which they started using this week as an epithet to discredit lawmakers opposed to John Roberts's appointment as Chief Justice. Labeling "unpatriotic" people who question ideologues' fantastic policies and dismissing dispassionate analysis as "ideological" are precisely the underhanded techniques ideologues use to ward off serious debate. That you resorted to this technique in an editorial this week concerning the military-condo complex's occupation of New Orleans is disheartening.

Please read the cover stories by Naomi Klein and Jeremy Scahill in this week's Nation magazine. Thanks.
