Editor,
Miles per gallon is but one piece of the automobile-environment story. Tires, motor oil, 12-lane highways, and parking lots all take an environmental toll, including destroying wild-life habitat. Transportation systems that are cheaper, more convenient, and more environmentally friendly than cars are easy to imagine. Only obsolete ways of thinking about social organization and infrastructure impede progress in this area.
