This interview with Max Blumenthal of the Nation explains that Palin was fully vetted, is a darling of the Christian right, and was chosen specifically to mobilize the formidable political machine of right-wing extremists such as James Dobson who until Palin was chosen were not at all motivated to grind out money, volunteers, or voters for McCain.
