What the devil is the United States military doing in Afghanistan? Who are we fighting? Why are we fighting them? What are we trying to accomplish?

Instead of waging inane (horrible, and destructive) wars for no discernible reason (oh, big profits for the armaments industry and paramilitaries such as Blackwater -- I mean Xe), and instead of peddling worthless securities at home and abroad, and instead of getting as many unemployed people in debt as possible, why does this great country of ours not PRODUCE something of value to our fellow human beings on the planet Earth?
