Most of the comments following this article state in a matter-of-fact manner that Islam is a violent religion and that Muslims are a threat. This reminds me of the matter-of-fact assumption in some quarters that poor young black men are a threat. And of course it reminds me of the deadly scapegoating of Jews in Germany in the 1930's.
Experience has taught me that individuals who conceptualize people of a particular race, religion, or ethnicity in terms of sweeping generalizations are not personally acquainted with anyone of that race, religion, or ethnicity and are thus utterly ignorant of individuals' in those groups personal history, station in life, or point of view.
Providing opportunities for social contact that would correct this situation is challenging, but the trust and understanding that result when it does happen are usually profound and life-changing.
