The ash heap of history.

When Mr. Obama speaks with Gen. McChrystal, I am sure the president will listen to all sides of the controversy, take full responsibility for the remarks, and do nothing about them.

The larger issue, though, is why in heaven's name is the U.S.A. engaged militarily in Afghanistan? Is it resources our rulers need? Oil pipeline rights of way? Strategic containment of the Chinese, who are cleaning our economic clock every day as more Americans lose their jobs and then their long-term unemployment benefits?

Empire is a bad idea. All of the empires that preceded ours ended the same way. Look around you. This is what the ash heap of history looks like.
