This hand could not have been played more miserably.
The Democrats blew on propping up the financial sector what little stimulus the Republicans could not prevent from being allocated. But the obvious problem from the beginning of this catastrophe was devastating unemployment.
The right play would have been to enact a latter-day WPA, and lord knows we need our roads, bridges, schools, levees, water mains, and other vital infrastructure maintained.
Now the political landscape is so polarized, so rife with disinformation, so full of clueless citizens boggled by lies the right-wing media is pumping into them that this ship can only be headed down.
Yes, the private sector creates jobs, but only when there is demand; and when there is no demand to be found, only the government can create it.
