Mr. Obama approaches being president as: making rousing statements to the effect that we are all comrades with the same interests at heart, which is false; then asking all the "stakeholders" in a particular issue to come to the table and offer their ideas, the best of which will rise like cream to the top through a process of consensus. And he clings to this model with the conviction of a true-believer, which is sad.

The Republicans and their media nutcases present simple-minded prescriptions for over-simplified cartoons of the problems that actually face the United States, with a measure of class-based cynicism to the effect that "I have mine" thrown in for good measure.

And these are our choices: a man at the helm who merely has to steer the ship where a committee of fools decide that it should go, or a gang of thugs with not enough intellectual honesty among them to open a walnut.

We are doomed.
