Republicans know they will crash Wall Street, crash the U.S. economy, and crash the world economy if they don't allow the debt ceiling to be raised. That is why the president should refuse to agree to one penny of spending cuts in exchange for agreement to raise the debt ceiling. Republicans are free to fight for their reactionary economic ideology all they want in the context of budget negotiations. The debt ceiling is nonnegotiable.
