Editor,
The Taliban harbored bin Laden before 9/11 not because of a shared ideological hatred for the United States but because bin Laden was helping the Taliban in their struggle to dominate Afghanistan.
After 9/11 the Taliban refused to give up bin Laden not on the basis of glee that the United States had been attacked but because they demanded "proof" that their ally in their domestic battles, bin Laden, had perpetrated the crime.
By my standards and those of almost anyone in the West, the Taliban are not nice people. But that can be said of many groups around the world, and I include among them Republicans, because of their war against American women and American working people.
The fact that the Taliban are bad people does not justify our occupation of Afghanistan, and no other reason I have heard convinces me that we should stay there.
