Neo-Feudal Propertied Elites

The Catholic Church hates liberation theology for the same reason that neo-feudal propertied elites everywhere always have and always will hate the populism of workers and the poor: the 1% are outnumbered 99-to-1, and liberation theology, like all progressive movements, threatens their political and economic hegemony.

I read an interesting sentence this afternoon in "The State of Islam: Culture and Cold War Politics in Pakistan" by Saadia Toor:

"Like all conservative and reactionary religious traditions, Maududite Islam was invested in control of women; therefore it was hardly surprising that the majority of Zia's Islamization efforts were aimed at regulating the mobility and visibility of women and effectively criminalizing their sexuality."

Sound familiar?
