Editor,
Small, greedy minds have insinuated their pathological understanding of what life is all about into the mainstream of American culture: that people do things not for the love of doing them or to contribute something beautiful, edifying, or useful to humanity but for money.
Money. Money. Money.
Since money is a necessity of life, like air or water, because it is the medium of exchange, it is not hard to get people who are strapped for cash to believe it. But it isn't true. Money is not why people love their kids or help their friends. Money is an obsession by a particular subset of humanity who are not able to be satisfied by anything but more and more and more money.
Not every person is obsessed with money, but the ones who are, because they have so much of it and because everybody needs some, have tremendous power over the lives of normal human beings.
