To reap.

Editor,

The West destabilized the Middle East after Word War I with the Sykes-Picot Agreement. And destabilized it again during the Cold War, installing pro-corporate military dictators across the region to suppress secular left opposition. And destabilized it again by invading Iraq and bombing Libya.

This is not to say that there are not rivalries endemic to the region and a strange expansionist religion emanating from Saudi Arabia (through Pakistan to al Qaeda to ISIS). But all of the state and non-state belligerents in the Middle East fight using the West's weapons.

Meddling in the internal politics of a region to plunder resources and quell dissent, and especially instigating or stoking wars there, creates terrible suffering on the part of innocent human beings unlucky enough to live there.

These are what the West has sown and refuses to accept the responsibility to reap.
