Editor,
Global warming is a far greater problem than either markets adapting to evolving fundamentals in the energy sector or political jostling for advantage in yet another quadrant of the globe that is rich in mineral resources.
The solution to changing geographic features in the Arctic is an international agreement to preserve and not industrialize the Arctic and redoubled efforts everywhere to curb the burning of fossil fuels.
Obviating the need to fund an ice-breaker race in the Arctic would open the door to increased investment in renewable energy and improving building efficiency. Agreeing to leave the Arctic "pristine" would salve every nation's worries that someone else is gaining advantage.
Global warming will kill us all if business continues as usual. Even war mongering politicians can understand that if they are able to get climate change into their thick heads.
The president blew it by approving Shell's drilling in the Arctic last month. He should have taken their lease to court and been willing to buy them out if necessary. The future of human civilization is worth more than $2 billion.
