The correct action for a George Allen or Pope Benedict XVI who abuses his position by revealing with insulting remarks a deeply insensitive perception of who his constituents are is not to apologize but to resign. These guys are perfectly well qualified to work as janitors or taxi drivers, but they are not qualified to work in the positions that they hold, and they should step aside so that people who are can take over.
