Authoritarians get away with their excesses in the USA because Americans have long since stopped perceiving themselves as citizens of a country. Here it is every man for himself, and as long as it is someone else who is disappeared, tortured, detained without habeas corpus -- or unemployed, foreclosed, or destitute for that matter -- it is of no concern to "me." "Me." That is all that matters anymore in the USA.
