Editor,
Requiring work for financial assistance in:
a) an age of structural unemployment, which will probably increase in the future as robots and other technologies continue to reduce the need for human employees,
b) a financialized economy in which businesses that make money by manipulating assets control enormous sums while people who actually do things, like sweep floors or make beds, are paid a pittance, and
c) a corporate environment in which executives pay themselves bloated multiples of employees' pay and dodge taxes to the extent that the most profitable businesses in history pay zero tax and individuals who gross millions of dollars a year pay a smaller share of their income than the people they employ
is either a cynical expression of contempt for individuals whose worth as human beings can only be appreciated in other than monetary terms or an expression of utter ignorance of the realities of the consequences of the appropriation of this planet by corporations.
